A SMALL PLACE TO START

Your next step
starts with a date.

Bring the date from your I-20 or EAD. Sign in or create an account to build a timeline around your details.

A program end date alone does not settle your filing deadline. Your DSO's SEVIS recommendation starts a separate clock.

What is your program end date?

Read the program end date on your most recent Form I-20. Not your graduation ceremony, last day of class, or degree conferral date.

Year, month, day. For example 2027-05-15.

Sign in or create an account to check your dates. With JavaScript, your date stays in this tab's memory only for up to 30 minutes and is lost on reload. Enter it again on signup; it is not automatically added to a case. Nothing is calculated here.

LESS SCATTERED. MORE SETTLED.

One next step.
Then the next.

Start with what you know. Keep the unanswered questions in view.

01

Give your dates some context.

Your timeline connects entered facts to filing windows and official guidance. Missing information stays a question, not a confident guess.

See the sample timeline
02

Your documents. Your decisions.

Use manual document preparation and guided drafting tools. Review every suggestion yourself; OPT Buddy never signs, files, or contacts your DSO for you.

Try the document demo
03

Know what needs a second look.

Track employment dates and unemployment days from your records. Your DSO settles SEVIS questions; a qualified attorney handles legal advice and substantive notice responses.

Keep the details in view.

Explore a fictional I-20, passport, I-94, and photo. Switch between the samples to see the fields and questions a document review brings into focus. This demo does not upload or scan your files; online scans in the app depend on service availability.

Program end date

The program end date is the field USCIS uses. It is not your graduation ceremony and it is not your conferral date.

Sample data. Fictional student, redacted on purpose.

Preflight never certifies a package as correct and never supplies a missing document. What it says is: we did not find a problem with these items, and USCIS is the only authority on acceptance.

Preparation guidance. Not legal advice.

We compute your dates from your own documents and the published rules, and we show you the source for every one. Your DSO and the official instructions are authoritative. When something needs a lawyer, we say so and stop.

  • Every rule on this page points at a .gov page, not at us.
  • Every volatile number carries the date we read it.
  • Where two official sources disagree, we show you both and apply the shorter figure.

Published effective date: September 15, 2026

The filing window is changing.

The DHS final rule published with a September 15, 2026 effective date shortens the post-completion OPT filing window and adds an extension of stay step for some students. This comparison models that published rule. Current guidance and court status have not been fully verified. Confirm the rule that applies to you with your DSO before acting on a projected deadline.

Use the checker with your own admission and filing details. It keeps uncertainty visible and tells you what to verify with your DSO.

The full comparison, fee context, and dated references are below. These are planning tools, not a determination of your immigration status.

Do I need an Extension of Stay?

Three questions. About two minutes. You get a dated answer with the rule behind it and a message you can send to your DSO.

Are you inside the United States on September 15, 2026?

The transition exemption turns on this date.

  1. 1You may file Form I-765 for post-completion OPT up to 90 days before your program end date. That earliest date does not change on September 15, 2026.Source: 8 CFR 214.2(f)(11)(i)(B); confirm current USCIS Form I-765 instructions. As of August 2026.
  2. 2Through September 14, 2026, the outer deadline is 60 days after your program end date. On and after September 15, 2026, it is 30 days after your program end date.Source: DHS final rule, 91 FR 44976, published July 17, 2026, scheduled effective date September 15, 2026; current legal status requires confirmation. As of August 2026.
  3. 3The latest OPT start date you may request drops from 60 days after your program end date to 30 days after.Source: DHS final rule, 91 FR 44976, amendatory instructions to 8 CFR 214.2(f)(11)(i)(D). As of August 2026.
  4. 4You must file Form I-765 within 30 days of the date your DSO enters the OPT recommendation in SEVIS. That is a separate clock and the rule does not change it. Whichever of the two deadlines falls first is the one that governs you.Source: 8 CFR 214.2(f)(11)(i)(B)(2); confirm current USCIS Form I-765 instructions. As of August 2026.
  5. 5USCIS accepts I-765 edition 08/21/25 and I-539 edition 08/28/24 only when postmarked or submitted electronically before September 15, 2026. Only edition 09/15/26 is accepted on or after that date. There is no grace period for this edition change. A paper application's receipt date is not its postmark.Source: USCIS Form I-765 and Form I-539 pages, edition alerts; browser-verified September 12, 2026. As of September 12, 2026.
  6. 6From September 15, 2026, a student recommended for post-completion OPT must apply for employment authorization and also apply for an extension of stay, unless the transition exemption applies.Source: New 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(D); DHS Study in the States, final rule Quick Facts, last updated August 27, 2026. As of August 2026.
  7. 7The transition exemption: if you were admitted for duration of status, you are in the United States on September 15, 2026, and you file Form I-765 for post-completion OPT on or before March 18, 2027, you are not required to file Form I-539 for that period of OPT.Source: New 8 CFR 214.1(m)(1)(i); Study in the States Quick Facts. As of August 2026.
  8. 8If you leave the United States before you file and are readmitted with a fixed period of admission, the exemption does not carry over. You then file both Form I-765 and Form I-539.Source: New 8 CFR 214.1(m)(1)(ii); Study in the States final rule FAQ. As of August 2026.
  9. 9If your timely, properly filed Form I-765 is already pending with USCIS on September 15, 2026, you do not have to file an extension of stay or refile.Source: New 8 CFR 214.1(m)(2); Study in the States final rule FAQ. As of August 2026.
  10. 10DHS may extend the March 18, 2027 date in six-month increments by publishing a notification in the Federal Register. Check for a later notice before relying on this date.Source: New 8 CFR 214.1(m)(1)(iii). As of August 2026.
  11. 11This comparison uses the published rule's scheduled effective date. Current guidance and court status have not been fully verified. Confirm the applicable deadline with your DSO before filing.Source: DHS final rule, 91 FR 44976; September 12, 2026 source review remains incomplete.
