OPT planning guide
STEM OPT extension: a practical planning checklist
A STEM OPT extension involves your school, your employer and you. A shared checklist makes it easier to see which step needs a signature, a school review or a follow-up.
Confirm the extension fits your situation
STEM OPT is an extension for qualifying students and employment arrangements, not an automatic result of having a technical job title. Review the USCIS eligibility guidance with your DSO, including the degree and employer requirements.
Before setting a submission target, gather your current EAD expiry and the DSO's STEM recommendation details. Leave enough preparation time for the employer and school to review the records. A date calculator cannot resolve eligibility questions.
Prepare the I-983 with your employer
Form I-983 describes the training arrangement and learning objectives. Work with the employer on the actual duties, supervision and evaluation process. A useful draft explains what you will learn and how the employer will assess it.
OPT Buddy includes guided preparation in Free. Pro can help draft wording, but you and the employer must review every statement and complete the appropriate signatures. An AI suggestion does not certify the training arrangement.
- Confirm the employer's details with the responsible contact
- Describe the real training objectives and supervision
- Check all required signatures and dates
- Follow your school's process for giving the I-983 to your DSO
Plan for reporting after approval
The application is only one part of STEM OPT. DHS describes recurring validation reports, progress evaluations and reports when relevant information changes. Keep these as separate checklist items so an application milestone does not hide a later obligation.
Assign each reminder a clear action, such as asking the employer to review an evaluation or confirming information with the DSO. Record completion and retain the supporting copy. Saving a task in OPT Buddy does not send a report to your school or update SEVIS.
Recheck the plan when a job or record changes
If employment changes, revisit the training plan and your school's reporting instructions. Keep the previous record and the new record distinguishable so you can explain the sequence without relying on memory.
Use the STEM route in the Free timeline planner to organize confirmed dates. For case-specific work authorization, filing or transition questions, use current agency guidance and your DSO or qualified counsel.
Check the official guidance
Use these primary sources and your school's instructions before acting. The editorial update above is not a certification of current legal status or a promise of ongoing monitoring.
Put your confirmed details into a plan
